Life Piet Retief Hospital makes provision for the treatment of surgical, medical, paediatric and day patients. It also offers obstetrics.

Specialist facilities

Accident and emergency unit
Our accident and emergency unit has a modern equipped resuscitation room and is in operation 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The unit is managed a local GP practice who works in partnership with our hospital. The unit is also supported by a private ambulance service. A doctor is on call 24 hours a day. Sophisticated diagnostic facilities are available as a part of the quality of service. The unit can be contacted directly on 017 826 9208.

We have a modern maternity unit at Life Piet Retief Hospital. The first immunisation, in hospital, is included in your hospital fee. A baby registration service is offered by the department of home affairs.

Visiting hours

The father of the baby is welcome any time until 20h00. Siblings of the baby are allowed one visit per stay to meet the new baby and grandparents are allowed during normal visiting hours.

Please note that no children (other than the siblings of the baby) will be allowed in the maternity unit.

Patient and visitor information

We would like to make sure that you have all the information you need in order to make your hospitalisation as pleasant and hassle-free as possible. If there is any further information that you or your family require regarding our hospital and our services, please feel free to contact us.


Accommodation at our hospital is extensive and includes:

  • Day beds
  • Private wards
  • General wards
  • High care unit
  • Intensive care units
  • We also offer TVs in all of our wards.

Private wards are all en-suite. An a la carte menu is available.


Our admission process can be made much easier for you, if the following simple guidelines are followed:

  • Medical aid patients should check with their medical aid prior to admission to obtain pre-authorisation, if deemed necessary by the medical aid.
  • Patients have to present their medical aid card and identity document on admission. Persons under the age of 18 have to be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian and need to supply their birth certificate or identity document.

To speed up admission, a pre-admission form is available from the doctor`s rooms and the hospital’s reception. Once it is completed, please hand it in at the hospital’s reception or fax it through to the hospital prior to hospitalisation. Please click here to find our contact details.

If you are from out of town, a list of accommodation near the hospital (for family members) can be supplied.


On being discharged from the hospital – do not forget to collect your medication and x-rays. You will be given a white discharge card to hand in at the reception desk in the foyer as you leave.

Service monitoring

In keeping with our goal to continue providing high quality care; we monitor our service to patients on an ongoing basis. During their stay patients are asked to complete an electronic questionnaire regarding their stay at the hospital. Participation is voluntary, but this will assist the hospital’s management to address any issues and improve our service to you.

Patients belonging to a registered medical aid fund

Hospital tariffs are charged according to the benefit scale. Some medical aid funds do require their members to make a co-payment.

We recommend that you get the following information from your medical aid prior to authorisation:

  • Costs that will be covered
  • Authorisation regarding hospitalisation
  • Maximum benefits or exclusions which might be applicable
  • Benefit restrictions regarding prosthesis and instrumentation

Patients not belonging to a medical aid fund (private patients)

An advance payment equalling the estimated costs of your account will be payable on admission. Please contact the hospital reception regarding any enquiries about your hospitalisation.

The hospital account does not include any other incurred costs e.g. for services rendered by your doctor, anaesthetist, radiologist, pathologist, etc. Please contact the hospital regarding advance payments prior to your admission. Visiting hours

We welcome all of our patients` visitors, as we know what a difference the support of close family and friends can make. However, we also have to be aware of the rest that all of our patients require thus we have certain designated times that loved ones can visit patients:

  • 11h00 – 12h00
  • 15h00 – 16h00
  • 19h00 – 20h00

Further to this, other rules apply with respect to visitors and these are:

Visitors are restricted to two per patient at a time. Children are welcome, but they must be accompanied by an adult. Please note that in specialised units such as the maternity ward – other visitation rules apply – please see the maternity section for more information.
